Thursdays with KUOW: Our Food, Our Stories

Food sustains us and delights us. It’s also an expression of our identity. Our region’s bounty has inspired dreamers and entrepreneurs. Their creations have put Washington on the culinary map. But food also touches many aspects of our society: health, economics, politics and agriculture. In this talk, KUOW's food reporter-Ruby de Luna-looks at some of the people who are inspired by food and use it to follow their dreams, or to engage their neighbors for social change.  ABOUT THURSDAYS WITH KUOW An NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll found that 68 percent of Americans do not have much confidence or any at all in the press. Additionally, according to a Pew Research Center poll, 83 percent of people in the Seattle area say they have never spoken with a local journalist. In an effort to counteract the erosion of trust in media, deepen the public’s understanding of journalism and ensure our community's voices are reflected in our reporting, KUOW invites you to a series of free public presentations and conversations with KUOW reporters. At each meeting, the journalist will talk about their work, answer your questions about the journalistic process and hear from you on what topics and stories are important to you and your community. Ruby has reported on immigrant communities and healthcare. She currently covers food and how it intersects with health, communities and culture. Ruby is a transplant from Taipei, Taiwan. She holds a BA in communication from Seattle Pacific University. In the age of computer/digital audio editing, Ruby is proud to be one of the few old–schoolers who can still edit tape with a razor blade. In her free time she practices her knife skills on new recipes.
