Skills of a Naturalist: Nature Journaling

Learn tools for slowing down and unplugging, using art as a tool to express yourself and cultivate curiosity about the world. In our Islandwood programs, art and journaling is an integral part of our students’ experience as we open up creative flow and inquiry with quiet observation. We embrace practice not perfection as we use art as a tool to ask questions, activate our senses, and deepen our relationship to our surroundings. Join artist Maria Coryell-Martin, who has taught with IslandWood for ten years, to explore creating colorful and expressive nature journals. We will practice techniques from fundamental sketching, to creative use of text, and spontaneous color. About the Artist:  Maria Coryell-Martin is an expeditionary artist following the tradition of traveling artists as naturalists and educators. Since 2005, she has focused on painting polar and glaciated regions, working scientists and expeditions in the Pacific NW, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and the Antarctic Peninsula. In the field, she sketches with ink and watercolor, and collects multimedia recordings to build her palette of place, a record of experience, climate, and color. This work inspires studio paintings for exhibits, as well as multimedia presentations and hands-on workshops to promote observation, scientific inquiry, and environmental awareness. Learn more at: www.expeditionaryart.com Thanks to special funding from the Bainbridge Community Foundation, tickets to this event are free!  Thank you BCF for this generous grant which allows us to introduce our talented Artists in Residence in our School Overnight Program to a community audience.
