      Ocean Conservation Honors Dinner

The Seattle Aquarium board of directors invites you to attend the Ocean Conservation Honors Dinner, an evening honoring leadership in the marine conservation field and celebrating individuals who are working to save the ocean. Thank you for coming together as advocates for Puget Sound and the ocean, and for supporting the Seattle Aquarium’s mission: Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment.  Honoring Sally Jewell  Sally Jewell’s love for the outdoors and drive to protect it was shaped by the natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. As a child, she and her family often sailed on the Salish Sea, which helped connect her to the importance of the region’s waters.  The lynchpin of Sally Jewell’s career, from her time as president and chief executive officer of REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) to her tenure as the 51st U.S. Secretary of the Interior, has been her commitment to conservation. Under her leadership, the Department of the Interior worked to secure healthy watersheds and initiate data-driven solutions to the impacts of climate change. In 2016, with encouragement from Sally Jewell, President Obama quadrupled the size of the Papahānaumokuākea marine reserve, making it the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under the U.S. flag, and one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world.     Sally Jewell’s dedication to science-based action unites all aspects of our democracy—nonprofit, business and government. She helped found the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust and is currently serving as a distinguished fellow at the University of Washington’s College of the Environment.     In addition to her numerous career accomplishments, Sally Jewell was the recipient of National Audubon Society’s Rachel Carson Award, the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Award for Public Service and the University of Washington’s Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.    We are thrilled to award Sally Jewell the 2020 Seattle Aquarium Sylvia Earle Medal.
